Oswego Grey Black Tea
All the comforting, familiar elements of traditional Earl Grey are present in this blend, but the herbs add complexity and depth which set it apart from rest. In place of the typical bergamot citrus oil flavoring, we've used a native herb of the same name and flavor profile; wild bergamot (also known as beebalm). Along with the Assam black tea we've blended a dark roast of our favorite tasty native hollybush, yaupon. Finally, there's a touch of lemongrass to brighten the blend up and round out the flavor.
The name behind this blend is significant as well. Many Native American nations used wild bergamot for traditional medicines, including those living in Oswego, NY. During the Revolutionary War when imported goods (specifically tea) were being boycotted the colonists turned to Native American knowledge of endemic plants for alternatives, which included wild bergamot. Tea made with this herb is often called Oswego Tea as a result.
